Ave verum
Ave verum
Ave verum is a short Eucharistic chant dating from the 13th Century. . The chant relates to the body of Christ and was used in Roman Catholic masses In 1791 Mozart composed the musical setting we use.
We sing it in the original latin – the words and a translation are set out below.
Ave, verum corpus
natum de Maria Virgine,
Vere passum immolatum
in Cruce pro homine,
Cujus latus perforatum
unda* fluxit (et)* sanguine,
Esto nobis praegustatum
in mortis examine.
Hail,true body
born of the Virgin Mary,
Who truly suffered, sacrificed
on the Cross for man,
Whose pierced side overflowed
with water and blood,
Be for us a foretaste
In the test of death
