Recent Activities
During Term 2 we have been rehearsing regularly on Tuesday evenings, preparing for concerts at Huon Park Village and Alan Walker Village that will occur early in Term 3. Our Music Director, Warren Fisher, has been introducing us to new songs and reprising songs in our library sung quite a while ago. He is aiming to have a significant repertoire from which to choose for our major concert in the Hornsby RSL Showroom on Sunday, 8 November.
On Wednesday, 1 July, we went to Belrose to Hang-out with the Karinya Hummingsong Choir, which is one of eleven choirs in Sydney. 21 of our members braved a wintery Wednesday evening to celebrate choral singing with the ladies from the Karina Choir. After a variety of warmups led by the two MDs, the ladies of Karinya sang “Ke Arona”, “Vuelie”, “Song of Hope”, “Ritmo”, and “Always Remember us this Way”, some accompanied by a drum.
Accompanied by Hank Xiang on piano, the KMC sang “What Would I Do Without My Music”, “The Hippopotamus Song”, “What a Wonderful World”, and “You Raise Me Up”. The most challenging part of the evening came with the choirs singing together. Kylie conducted “I Like the Flowers” and “Blue Moon” and Warren conducted “Singin’ in the Rain”. The evening concluded with supper. A good night was had by all.
So far this year we have presented a concert at Aminya Village in early March. The choir of 25 was conducted by Warren in public for the first time, with Anita Kyle as Associate Artist contributing to the program. The small audience appreciated our performance and enjoyed joining in some of the songs.
Again, this year the choir supported the ANZAC day ceremony presented by the Kokoda Track Memorial Walkway located at Concord West on 18 April.
How’s the Choir going?
While the tide seems to be turning with a few prospective members joining us during the term, as always, we are keen to welcome additional singers, particularly tenors, to join us in our weekly celebration of choral music and friendship each Tuesday evening. Warren Fisher has been appointed to lead the choir into its 80th year, taking over from Dr Paul Whiting OAM who has been our Music Director for the last 26 years. Our choir is one of the oldest male choirs in New South Wales and is an integral part of the Northern Suburbs community.
Warren strongly believes that everyone should sing, not because it helps brain development, concentration skills or literary and numeracy skills, but because everyone can do it. Warren firmly believes that “When we sing we access areas of our being that may otherwise be left dormant; and it just feels so good.” He has an extensive record of performances in opera and other theatrical activities and over the past few years has led choral activities at Knox Grammar School.
We look forward to his leadership in growing the choir and widening our performance venues.
